Embracing Simplicity: The Power of a Uniform in a Busy Life

As a full-time professional, ministry leader, and Ph.D. student, life can feel like a

marathon of high-stakes moments. From defending research to leading focus groups, presenting on stage, or simply running into a congregant at the grocery store, the pressure to show up as your best self is constant. One way I've learned to navigate these demands with grace is by embracing the concept of simplicity—especially when it comes to my wardrobe.

Why Simplicity Matters

When you're balancing multiple responsibilities, decision fatigue is real. The energy you spend deciding what to wear could be better spent refining a presentation or preparing for a meeting. A streamlined wardrobe—your personal "uniform"—eliminates unnecessary decisions and ensures you're always dressed in a way that reflects your confidence and purpose.

Simplicity also fosters focus. In the midst of high-stress situations, the last thing you need is self-doubt creeping in because of an ill-fitting outfit or mismatched pieces. By curating a wardrobe that celebrates your current size and style, you can show up fully present, knowing your appearance aligns with the message you want to convey.

The Stakes Are High, But You Are Higher

It's no secret that negative self-talk intensifies when the stakes are high. Moments like a dissertation defense or a public presentation are already nerve-wracking, and an outfit that doesn’t feel right can amplify that inner critic. That’s why I’ve made it a priority to invest in pieces that make me feel strong, capable, and polished—whether I’m on stage or in the grocery aisle.

Even leisure wear matters. Ministry leaders often find themselves “on” at unexpected times, like bumping into a follower or member while running errands. In those moments, having doubts about your outfit can undermine your ability to connect authentically. Instead, being dressed intentionally—even casually—helps maintain a sense of readiness and confidence.

Building a Wardrobe That Works

Here are a few tips for curating a wardrobe that supports simplicity and confidence:

  1. Define Your Style: Choose a look that aligns with your personal and professional identity. For me, that’s Parisian-inspired, minimal, and versatile—think Audrey Hepburn meets the cool professor.

  2. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity: Invest in a few high-quality staples that fit well and can be mixed and matched. These should include tailored pieces for formal settings and polished casual options for everyday wear.

  3. Celebrate Your Size: Your current size is worthy of celebration. Choose pieces that flatter your shape and make you feel confident in the body you’re in right now.

  4. Include Comfortable, Presentable Leisure Wear: Have a few outfits that are both cozy and polished for errands or casual encounters. Think stylish joggers paired with a chic sweater or a tailored hoodie with sleek sneakers.

  5. Stick to a Color Palette: A cohesive color scheme makes it easier to create outfits and ensures everything works together seamlessly.

Dressing for Confidence

Your wardrobe is more than just clothing; it’s a tool for empowerment. When you’re juggling the demands of a Ph.D. program, full-time work, and ministry, presenting your best self isn’t vanity—it’s strategy. It’s a way to quiet the inner critic, focus on what matters, and show up fully for the work you’re called to do.

Simplicity in your wardrobe is simplicity in your mind. And in the grand scheme of a busy life, that simplicity is priceless.

What steps are you taking to simplify your life and show up as your best self?
